The convergence around the concept of "meaningful use" continues in the the Health Information Exchange ("HIE") space. The reasons for this are quite clear, HHS' meaningful use matrix puts a strong emphasis on interoperability between EHRs in order for this objective to be obtained, and by the way, for providers and facilities to get paid their EHR incentives. This makes perfect sense since without interoperability the vision of a nationally available electronic health records simply cannot be realized. HIE are the organizations that will facilitate interoperability, that is, the organizations that will help provide the enabling standards based "plumbing" that will allow the free, and secure, flow of electronic health records to the point of care.
